Ouch! That really hits home, hurts about as much as sciatica.
When I was looking for my first car, 50 years ago this past summer, I almost bought a ’65 Mustang. It was a bit expensive but the concept of being a collector’s car never occurred to me, just that it was a 7 year old car. The funny thing is my brother was looking to upgrade his car and offered me his ’72 Pinto to just take over payments, so that was my first car.
Pinto vs. Mustang. Ever seen a Pinto owners’ club? Me neither.
There’s one in Tampa. They park with the VW club at shows.
In 1972 I was 17 and I bought a 1966 Mustang convertible in very nice condition with the hi-po 289 for $1000. 2 years later I traded it in on a 1970 Camaro SS with the 396 and they gave me $1000 for it. The price for the Camaro was $2200. I wish I still had both.
In 1972 I bought a 1969 AMX dark royal blue, 390ci., hurst 4speed go pack, 356 rear end. The American Motors pony car! Then some asshole thought the Pacer would be the car of the future. Don’t look back you can never look back! Look at us now.
Thanks, CederQ
i could have gone all day without seeing this
And that era’s music STILL is better than the crap the yungin’s listen to today!!!!
You really know how to make a person wake up. Holy smokes that’s a lot of memories right there!
I was at the nursing home this morning telling my mother about the 1938 tractor, which is 10 years younger than she is, that I bought Saturday. “That’s only 10 years older than you are”. she said. “It’s not that old”. I wish she was right. And Steve next above is sure right. —ken
The stoush between the Pommies and the Argies over the Falkland Islands was 40 years ago. In the same era, the Blues Brothers made a really good movie, with plenty of the real greats of rythm & blues and soul, 40 bloody years ago.*
It’s a shame that Blues Brothers II was filmed at all.
*Note, don’t go pissing off Kissinger on Saturday Night Live, John Belushi would have been 40 older now, well, maybe.
Don’t try to proofread when all the letters look 3-dimensional and transparently grey. Should be: Belushi would have been 40 years older.
BTW, Henry Kissinger looks like he did 50 years ago in photos. Either the presstitutes are lazy and use old stock pictures, or he and his pal Soros are hitting the Adrenachrome like it’s Geritol!
For several years now, I’ve been seeing lists of “These albums are 50 years old this year.” I not only recognize all of them, but I still have the vinyl for most. One of these days, I’ve got to get up the ambition to reassemble my turntable and sound system. It got put into boxes when we moved four years ago, and they’re still in the garage.
My old amp ( 53 years old!) and transcription turntable are still alive, well, and operational. LOVE to listen to the old albums I have but the pop drives me crazy – I’m a digital guy through and through – I’m a snob when it comes to noise. If it ain’t ADD or DDD I don’t necessarily want to listen to it! Funny, that.
ADD = Analog recording Digital mixdown Digital playback
DDD is digital ALL the way!
At 21, I was 37 years downstream of WW2. At my current age, I’m 47 YEARS downstream of the VIET NAM WAR!!! SHE-IT!
Laugh In. Imagine some network putting that on the airwaves these days. That was one of the all time great comedy shows ever. I remember coming back from overseas deployment; alright it was Canada, NAS Argentia NFLD, but still a foreign country, and watching it for the first time in Feb ’68 in the barracks at NAS Brunswick. I almost busted a gut laughing and watched it every week until it was canceled. One ringy dingy, two ringy dingy…
Laugh In also featured Tom Lehrer a time or two. Still have his albums. “So Long Mom, I’m Off to Drop the Bomb” is as good today as it was then.
