I remember my father popping us in the car to drive 20 miles to get gas at 0.29 a gallon as opposed to paying 0.32 at the closer station.
of course that was the 60’s.
He wasted that advantage by driving the 20 miles there and back… Some people don’t understand basic economics.
Maybe if it means dollars….

I paid .64/gallon back in the early 70’s. The $20.00/week I made on my paper route kept me in gas, 2-cycle oil, and bait for the week on my boat. These days, $20.00 wouldn’t even cover the bait!
Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking that the value (purchasing power) of the US dollar is constant. It has been declining steadily over the years as the government continues to print more and more of them with less and less backing.
I remember the days of those signs at gas stations as I was born in the 1950s. Back then we used 90% silver coins which went out of circulation on 1964. Today, one of those silver coins is worth over 20X its face value. Using that metric, that posted 30 cent price is equivalent to about $6.00 today.
Even using the BLS inflation calculator(which badly understates actual inflation for political reasons), if that sign was from 1950, that posted 30 cent price is equivalent to $3.56 today.
I pumped gas in the 60’s for 30 cents. Like the guy above says, that’s like 3.00 or more today.
By Friday’s close of $22.50, a 90% silver dime is work $1.65. The 30 cent gas is $4.96 and the 28 cent gas is $4.63.
Yeah, I remember putting 30 cent gas in my first car in 1972. Even less when there was a “price war.” I remember 20 cent/gal gas (always ended with .9 cents/gallon in Florida, like “19 and 9”) I’m just not sure I ever paid that.
my grandpop sent me to get 10 cents worth of gas for the lawnmower, I was around 10yo i was born in 58 so the tells ya about the year. I remember the gas station guy asking me ” where do you want behind the ear” I walked away with a half gallon of gas, or there abouts………..
About 57 years ago, my dad hat a fit when gas went from .11 to 13/gal – when I went to HS (’68-’71) it started to creep past .25/gal up to .31/gal
And, remember S&H… Green Stamps!!
I use the levi scale myself. when I started working for 5 buck per day doing concrete work under the table with dad. a very long time ago. anyway, new jeans where just under 7 bucks and top of the line timberland boots where I think 12 bucks. gas was like 20 something cents per gallon.
now jeans made here cost how much ? timberland boots are no longer made here, so I guess danner or some other brand made here is what these days ?
first new gun I bought was a savage 24 in 410 and 22lr I think it was under 70 bucks then. still have the gun too ! very good for small game.
back then, 10 bucks would fill the tank of the old pick up and get a case of beer
for a good weekend ! if I knew the old trucks and cars would end being worth what they are today, I would have saved a few in my uncle barn !
pass on a deal once, 58 vette with 2 extra tops and spare engine for 1200.
and yes I had the money to buy it too ! just not enough for the insurance too.
If you guys can remember those signs, like I do, you’re almost as old as I am. I was a teenager when those signs advertised gas at those prices.
I never thought I’d see gas below a dollar again, but in ’99, when we moved here, it went down to 92 cents for a little bit. I didn’t think it would retreat below 4.00 when Wingnut Head was in office. but it did…..
Just wait, they’ll pull a few zeros off our venzuelan dollars in a few years, and it’ll be back close to that….
