Laying It Down Iconically

You gotta be a certain age to ride this ride kids.

That makes me wonder how many people alive today have even ever heard of Frank Marino?

Some may, here he is then and now.

I stumbled on this video while doing some Youtube Surfing and was blown away all over again by this guy.

He was heavily influenced by Jimmy Hendrix and this is his rendition of Voodoo Child.

The owner of the video has banned reproduction of it but this is good enough that you need to click through and watch it.

Give the video a couple minutes for the camera guy to get his head out of his ass and then prepare to get BLASTED IN THE FACE the way only Frank can do it.

  1. I first saw/heard them on Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert tv show sometime in the early 70’s. Became a fan immediately. Owned most of their albums at one time. I transferred them to digital a few years ago, and sold off all my vinyl a couple years ago.
They never had the fame they deserved, but had a loyal fan base.

  2. I’m lucky if I remember last week, but hitting that wiki link, yeah. In high school, I knew about Mahogany Rush. Damn, that was a long time ago.

  3. Yeah, I remember him, but since I’m not a fan of Hendrix or that type/style of music, all I can say is, “ho hum”.

    Sorry, ain’t my bag.

  4. I have Mahogany Rush cassettes in a box somewhere…. Probably with the Savoy Brown Humble Pie and Uriah Heep tapes.

  5. Ladies and gentlemen…

    Would you please welcome…

  6. Thanks for putting this up, Phil.
I liked it, but you knew I would.
Just what I needed on a chilly, damp Sunday afternoon.

  7. Love Frank Marino and saw him perform several times back in the day.
He is the friend of a friend of mine and I have had the pleasure to speak with him on a few occasions. He is a genuinely nice person.

  8. I still have the black cover live album and studio ‘Tales of Unexpected’ as well as a cassette of ‘What’s Next’. Haven’t heard them in decades.

i stillhave that black cover live album

  9. Ahh, Frank Marino and ‘Hog Rush–saw ’em live in CLT back in the late 70s. Can’t remember who they were opening for, but I sure do remember Frank Marino.

Oh yeah, got something for ya over at my place I think you might enjoy, Phil ol’ boy. Just go looky, you’ll know right away what I’m talking about. 😉

  10. Somehow I missed Frank. The guy who did impress me the most was Pat Travers. At a jam packed club in San Francisco; a classic power trio, one guy on a guitar, bass and drums doing full on screaming hard rock.
I also saw Pat Metheny in Portland long ago. I was expecting mellow jazz like his albums. Wrong. It was thumping jumping rock and roll too.

  11. To freakin’ weird. Mahogany Rush came up on my shuffle play today at work (I’ve got over 20K songs). Must have been a deep cut cause I’d never heard it, but it was great!
