Jose Can You See?

Because I can’t fucking see.

Even with three month old glasses.

Jesus Christ, talk about Needle Dick Bug Fucker Tiny assed print.

That’s the numbers off what’s left of a dinky little bearing seal.

How dinky?

This Dinky,

Notice there aren’t any actual roller bearings anymore…

Even with my Harbor Freight Special lighted magnifying glass I couldn’t see that shit.

I had to use the camera on my phone, switch to something called Macro Mode and even then blow the damn thing up using max brightness on the light.

608S.

Small even compared to a 6000V, the other one I need.

At least I could read that one.

I’m trying to rebuild a 15 gallon barrel type industrial vacuum motor.

This thing has turned into a nightmare.

I thought I found a new motor on Fleabay. Most of them are well North of $100 and none of them look right.

I must not have been paying close enough attention.

$50 some bucks, advertised as New in an Open Box, it showed up today and is way too small.

I have searched and searched and can’t find this particular model of an Ametek Lamb vacuum motor and pump.

So I am doing shit the hard way.

It’s a Dayton Industrial barrel vac and it’s way obsolete.

I got it from work because we couldn’t find a motor for it there and they just bought a new one.

Since it’s Vintage you know I just had to have it.

So I just got done ordering some new bearings and some new brush holders from that cretin Bezos and using the Prime option, they are supposed to be here tomorrow.

Just getting what was left of the one and the bigger one turned into a shit show and took well over an hour.

Most of that was finding and setting up a bearing puller conglomeration.

It’s not like there is any hurry or that I don’t have a thousand other things to be doing ya know.

Anyway, I doubt anyone with 20/20 vision could have read those numbers without magnification.

It does highlight the usefulness of a damn cell phone though.

For something besides being a tracking device, a tattle tail and a general pain in the ass.

  1. I’ve had a few small-print numbers I had to get, you’d be surprised what a Halogen light and a polarization filter will do to help read the numbers. If I had an IR camera I’dve been able to read other numbers that had faded easily.

Try reading the vacuum tube nomenclature off of a 50-year-old tube so you can replace it! There are several tricks, but the IR camera can read ’em plain as day!

  2. Yesterday I had a 4 1/4″ wheel seal on a 650 bushel gravity wagon that had a National number that was so small as to be unreadable with my 71 year old eyes even under magnification. Took it to the local supplier and the 40 something guy couldn’t make it out either. Had to get out the caliper and then check the book for application. At least they had the four seals that I needed to get the wagon out of my shop and back to the customer.

  3. it one of those stainless steel ones , right ? had one myself and gave it away to a guy who was doing small jobs cleaning out houses and apts.
I only had to undercut the armature (?) a bit to get it working. and replace the brushes, easy enough. he helped me out with something and like it,
told me what he was doing and how it was working out for him, so I gave it to him
already had like 5 different shop vacs anyway.

  4. Should just need to measure id, od, and thickness of bearing to find new ones online these days. Might save ya some frustration in the future. I use the phone trick to read medication labels too. Getting old sux!

  5. Y’know how humans share 98% of their DNA with chimpanzees?

I think Phil shares 98% of his DNA with squirrels or pack rats. Just saying, is all … >};o)

    • PhilB, we share up to 96% of our DNA with every mammal and animals on this planet and a large percentage of DNA with plants… DNA just gets expressed differently in other species.

  6. if you can find one of those old bearing house books, it will show all the sizes and even what bearing will interchange . just remember that a old friend had a few of the sk’s and some other makers. haven’t seen one in years though.
now that most of our stuff is made outside the country, I doubt they even have them anymore.
