Contrary to what you might think, it’s not always about Death Metal with me.
I grew up with Country music due to my Maternal Grandparents and every once in a while a little taste fills a place in my soul.
Certain simple things.
I’m not even sure calling this Country is accurate but it’s about the only platform you will hear it on.
I’m not talking about that Twangy shit or the formulaic crap they play on the radio all the time that all sounds the same to me.
I stumbled across this while looking for something else and gave it a shot, not really knowing what I was going to experience even though it’s a classic from long, long ago.
I’m glad I did.
This works for me.
The star of the show is the instrument more so than the star playing it.
It is a piece of history in it’s own right.
I’ll take that any day, over what I’ve heard on the big country station here.
Amen.
I think Country, and also Bluegrass, music are just fine, provided the songs were recorded before 1975.
Ah, c’mon. I didn’t start listening to Bluegrass until 1984. Lots of great stuff – Berline Crary & Hickman, Hot Rize, New Grass Revival, Yonder Mountain String Band, just to name a few. Perhaps not technically “Bluegrass”, Mean Mary was born in 1980. Also, try Southern Raised. Either of those will get you a “related” trove of great music on YouTube.
American Roots music is alive and well.
That was great, that was moving. Hope your health saga is going in a positive direction, I’m not a big fan metal, but I ran across Sound of Silence by Disturbed. I liked the Simon and Garfunkel version, but holy shit, Disturbed really takes it to (some superlative description that escapes me) level.
You don’t get requests, but I’m asking you to post that one. I’m sure NOBODY knows about it but ME. Do yer crew a favor and post that one up, or not.
Thanks for your efforts and blog.
When Disturbed first came out with that, my son(who has a very eclectic taste in music) introduced it to my wife – who thought it was great. He also had her listen to some Hu as well. Yuve Yuve Yu was one she liked.
Yup, Hu is (to me) surprisingly good. A lot of new (to me) music I find from comments and links. Thanks for the links down below, you guys.
Yeah, I know about Disturbed. Not a fan, but whatever floats yer boat, eh? Speaking of covers, strangest one I’ve come across is probably Kompressor covering Girl From Ipanema. Then there’s Puddles Pity Party.
Do you like the stuff Richard Cheese is doing – converting music into the Big Band Sound? Imagine that being done to “Enter Sandman” – it’s out there.
Not quite my cuppa, although “People = Shit” is funny.

I do like big band, but mainly the old classics.
I came across a nice Bluegrass cover of Sandman a couple weeks ago. Still, not something I’d listen to every day.
Some more mandolin–

Good stuff. Some of the best recordings I’ve heard are from the one-track sessions featuring a bunch of guests. Try Earl Scruggs with a cast of well-known musicians doing Foggy Mountain Breakdown:

Bluegrass? Some really talented musicians you might like,
Alison Krause, with or without Union Station. You probably know this:

and Rhonda Vincent and the Rage

Lots more of their work on YouTube
How about metal songs in bluegrass? These ole boys ain’t half bad.

A different take on the same theme. One of the first to go this route.

Or the most innovative use of a mandolin? Solid body electric mandolin.

Watch out for the rabbit hole any of those three will send you down.
Check out Willie and Ray Charles on a duet called “Seven Spanish Angels”. If it doesn’t work for you, you’re dead.
