  2. Hey, I own some really nice shit. But most of it started out as old disregarded (or sold cheaply) shit that needed repair/rebuilding/restoration. It’s the only way I can lead a lifestyle of owning lots of cool, nice shit on a modest income. Tools, cars, old stereo equipment, pinball machines, even cool decorative stuff like an old copper and brass fire extinguisher that I shined up and makes a nice display piece. Or a real Tiffany table lamp I installed a new socket, cord and switch in, and resoldered the shade to repair quite a few cracked joints in the lead channel, and then cleaned up to look great.

  3. The number one lesson I learned from my parents is do not buy cheaply made stuff. Know what you want, know how much it costs, and then save your money until you can afford to buy it.

      • Old stuff is often well made stuff. Making it nice again makes it better than new cheaply made stuff.

  4. Oh, yes! I’m on a farcebox group for the cameras I use and am regularly pissed off at the buying, buying, buying habits of so many members. If they haven’t got the latest toys and bragged about them they’re at a loss. My cameras are about twelve years old – prehistoric in their view – but work well and if they go wrong ( it’s rare) I’m not afraid to get out the JIS screwdrivers and investigate. Sometime they even work after I’ve been in . . .

  9. Another reason the worthless government controls “education” is to make sure you NEVER LEARN STUFF LIKE THAT! Dependency is what keeps them alive.
