  1. Yeah, but those motorized shoulder belts. Man, that was a shitty idea that thankfully went away.

  2. Did you hear about the recall for ‘91-‘93 Camrys?

Toyota figured that the owners should uncheap and buy something new…

  3. Attack shoulder belts, a product of the early 90’s. I had a 94 Saturn with them. The cars of the early 90’s were better built than the crap of today. That Saturn turned 185k in 5 years. It needed all the classic problems fixed; Driver seat back bolster failure (remember the commercial), alternator overcharge failure – blow a battery every 4 months, AC compressor dying – OMG I am frying when it is 95 or hotter, an original clutch that needed replacing, and it was time for rotors and pads. Traded for a 99 F150 that I put 190k on it over 12 years when it was killed by a Swift truck driver that rear ended me.

I have a F350 that is dead at 102k miles. It is in the shop. We will see. Then there is the 04 Ranger. It is at 147k and has a parasitic power loss but could easily run a coast to coast run. Besides normal maintenance it is just broken in.

The wife has an 18 Audi Q3. It was a last year body model with a 25 year improved 2.0L turbo engine. It has 99k on it and it still has the original brake pads on it, nothing but scheduled maintenance.

Buy last year models with proven drivetrains. Keep them for 8+ years and over 100k on the odometer or beyond.

  4. I think that Camry was running the immortal 22RE, 2400cc 4 banger.
My, very ugly, ’86 Toyota, 1 ton(!), long bed, seems to be semi immortal.
My truck is a 5%er. 5% of ’86 pick ups had the, apparently, immortal, maint. free, 1st gen fuel injection, 22RE. Around the hills of Tennessee here, it gets 26+ mpg. On the freeway, not exceeding 65 mph, it gets 30+.
Most of its life, it was a San Diego, dry, east county truck. Been In Tennessee for 11 years, got pin hole rust in the floor panels. Frame, suspension, running gear, all xlnt.
    I’m a happy camper.
Oh, and because the 1 ton has a lower gear ratio, I can run oversized BFG, Mud Terrain tires on the rear, without bogging it down. Though, with my tire size differential, when then speedo says 65, I’m doing just over 70. So I’m registering l’m registering miles tham I’m going.

  5. I wouldn’t be able to afford the gas to find out, but my 1985 Beaver Motor Coach has that CHebbie “million mile” truck engine with only 40K+ miles on it. At 4.3 MPG I’m not in any hurry to put lotsa miles on it!
