  1. We called it “monkey blood”. The worst of scrapes would never get infected, and on those scrapes, a little dancing was required after it was applied.

  2. Once – after that I never complained unless I was sure it was going to involve a visit to the Dr. or the emergency room.

  3. We had merthiolate. Stuff is still available – I just found it on Amazon. Yeah, it stung. Stuff has acetone in it, as well as alcohol.

  4. Monkey’s Blood was a staple in my mother and grandmother’s medicine cabinet. I hated that shit. “Hold still while I put some of this acid on your open wound” 🤬🤬

  5. There were 4 boys in our house. My mother kept on the kitchen window sill for easy access. Right next to the little bacon grease pot.

  6. I can remember my mother using iodine. Mercurochrome seemed tame by comparison.

    Evil Franklin

  7. My mother also used it. Stung like a SOB, but the cuts and scrapes never got infected. Try finding it at your pharmacy, you won’t. As Mr. Mayo above relates, it is available at The Beast’s Big Smile.

Another highly effective, inexpensive treatment buried in favor of Dr’s or hospital visits and broad spectrum antibiotics. Why, because they put more money into the health care industrial complex.

  8. We got painted with merthiolate. Probably could still find some leftover in mom’s cabinet.

  9. I never had trouble with Mercurochrome. Didn’t hurt at all. Merthiolate was the evil stuff. The stuff must have been designed by fallen angels showing just how much they hate mankind.

  10. We had Cuts and Scrapes cleaned with “Green Soap”, an Antiseptic. Then Betadine (Alcohol and Iodine) for Scrapes, and (Mil-Surplus) Sulfa Powder for Cuts. Followed by a Band-Aid. Never an Infection.

Now, I use the Betadine for Cuts and Scrapes on my Horses… O, boy, you want to see Screaming and Jumping by a 2,000+ Pound Critter… And Never an Infection.

  11. Betadine is painless. Any diabetics reading this who are prone to small injuries in the legs or feet should demand a script for Mupirocin 2% ointment. It comes in a 15gram tube, lasts a fair while because you don’t use much at a time. It’s the ointment applied to amputee’s wounds while they’re healing, good stuff!
