  1. From The Portable Curmudgeon, attributed to JB Priestly: “One of the delights known to age, and beyond the grasp of youth, is the pleasure of Not Going.”
In my younger days, I preferred driving at night. A fresh pack of cigs, stop at Dunkin Donuts for a couple jelly filled, and a big cup of coffee, and I could drive all night. Nowadays, it’s more than a hazard of not seeing well at night. We live in open range country, and the ranchers favor Black Angus. Those coal black bastards are invisible at night!

    • here in the hills of pa. it is the damn deer on the road.
8 years now and I came close a few times. but hitting a damn deer at 45-55 mph is not something I want to do.
wife says I have really fast reflexes is why we have yet to hit one of them so far. but yeah, used to do a fair bit of night driving myself
back in my younger years. and I like driving 4runners now instead of sportscars. more metal between me and whatever I might hit.
was driving a 87 4runner back in the late 1990’s. got hit by a tractor trailer sitting a light. really fucked up the truck. but I did walk away from it. not well or steady. but I walked away from that wreck.
bent frame, broken rear axle and more. still I walked away.
      been driving one ever since.

      • I don’t wear glasses and my vision is pretty good but I tried a low-cost version of the yellow tinted sunglasses. They work great on overcast days and driving at night. The difference is very noticeable.
