Harken back to a time before Civilization became civil. It will be our savior.

“It was so called civilization that blunted a man’s innate brawling instincts and tamped down his evolutionary compulsion to control others through force. Only prison or war could ultimately free a “civilized” man to be his true self by stripping away the outward restraints society imposed upon the born savagery of Homo sapiens.” Clive Cussler/Mike Maden, Firestrike; A Novel of the Oregon Files

  1. Damn I used to read anything Cussler put out but then he went with Ghost writers and the quality of writing fell off a cliff. Formulaic as hell, I could see where Cussler wrote something and when the Ghost writer wrote something plain as day.
The Dirk Pitt series was awesome though.
I even had an autographed copy of one of his earlier books but I gave it to a younger brother for Christmas one year because he was the one who turned me onto Cussler in the first place,

    • Some of the latest ghost writers have in my opinion have surpassed Clive Cussler in his writing. I have enjoyed them as of late. Some of them suck howler monkey ass like your so eloquently stated. I have been a long time reader of his. Only series I am not as fond of is his Isaac Bell series since the beginning. Only one author I don’t have an autographed book is Clive Cussler, I have Grishom, Baldacci, Childs and Brown.

      • I too am a Cussler fan. Just finished “Fire Strike” ghosted by Mike Madden. It was pretty good, IMHO. I’ve also read most all of Baldacci and Childs. I gave up on Grisham. His writing became formulaic and tedious long ago, IMHO. I have Stuart Woods’ latest collaboration with Brett Battles waiting on the coffee table while I finish Colson Whitehead’s “Crooks Manifesto”. First time I’ve read Whitehead. So far, so good, about 1/4 through.

My favorite all time is Michener. Got hooked on his scribbles back in eighth grade when “South Pacific” was included at the back of my then history or maybe it was an English text book. Read all of that, didn’t read much of the rest of the book.

        • I am reading Firestrike now. Our little library gets them in when they can. It survives on grants, donations, cake sales, some city money and the such. Doesn’t get any from the county of Douglas at all, damn crooked cheapskates, but, oh, the county sheriffs have all brand new Ford SUVs and pickups and the fire department got a bunch new fire trucks and even got an electric one… The county stupidvisors just raised their annual pay and benefits.

  2. Huge Cussler fan here. I don’t read enough and have one of his at home waiting to be opened (The Gray Ghost).
I have only seen one movie of his books. Would love to see more.

  3. I’ve read a lot of ‘pockyclips fiction, or doomsday porn, but Cussler is one I’ve missed somehow. There are clues in the above discussion, but where should I start?

  4. “Civilized Men are more Discourteous than Savages, because they know they won’t have their Skulls Split, as a general thing.” Robert E. “Conan” Howard.
