Thanks for stamping my man card on a Monday morning.
How many man card stamps does it take to get a free Glock?
WTF is up with troop? He needs to get his pack squared away, and why is he carrying a retail boltie?
I think that’s a Winchester 70. Maybe he got sniper duty for the weekend and was in a hurry?
Looking at the rear sight, and comparing the rifle to the twin that lives in my safe, I’m real sure it’s a post-64 Model 70, wearing an M84 scope. How the rifle got to Viet Nam is anybody’s guess.
I think the 70 was standard issue. Not sure about the scope, most of the scopes I’ve seen in pics were much longer.
Carlos Hathcock and some of the early Marine snipers used Model 70 match rifles with heavy barrels and Unertl scopes, before USMC standardized the Remington 700. The M84 was meant for the M1-D sniper rifle and the scope could have come off one of those or been sourced thru the supply system or no telling how. There’s really no telling how any of that rig came together. I’m eventually gonna clone that rifle, if I can find a replica M84 scope.
well, the radio is the big thing/part. the ruck he can drop if need be.
also not there is a spare battery where he can get to it fast.
out in the bush. the radio is their lifeline. it is everything
resupply, fire support and pickup- get the fuck out of here now.
some guys fitted the radio, PRC 77 I think it was inside their ruck
but if you did that, you lost room for rations and ammo.
dry socks and other things that made life a little easier out there.
Outstanding collection – thanks
