I can still smell the oil of wintergreen we used to dress our tyres!
In the mid-60’s I soon realized that this is not for kids….we used to have drag races with our slot-cars, fire burn-outs (Zippo lighter fluid). The old guys wired their own motors, and spent big bucks on their toys. We didn’t have the knowledge or money to compete.
Ha, mid 60’s…same here, I barely had enough money to be a stock car runner. The older guys with their wire frames, special compound, fat tires, thin plastic bodies, it was all very exotic to this kid. I had fun, the exotics didn’t bother me. I still say “corners like a slot car” for a good handling car.
Wow, slot cars! That was some time ago.. Makes me smile.
I remember when the “Globe” motor was The Hot Setup. They cost more than my car, controller, and all the spare parts I ever had. The Old Guys were running cars with these motors and a brass tube chassis, and you just couldn’t get near them.
Days of you’re. Last time I raced slots was in Blairstown NJ in 1997. Even then, slot car tracks were a rarity. Even moreso now.
We had one of those places in my podunk Western town until not long ago. It closed up and became a place that sells used tires and rims… ‘Sign of the times, I guess… I guess the big surprise is that it didn’t become a taco shop…
It’s Fooseball on wheels. I couldn’t see that damn ball either.
I used to build my own chassis and wind my own motors. Had a hell of a collection.
Used to race slot cars at Celebrity Center in Glendale, Colorado in the early 80s, they had some nice tracks, 4 or 5 if i remember. Nice place built by investors included Walt Disney, his brother Roy, Jack Benny, Bing Crosby, George Burns, Charles Laughton, Burl Ives, Art Linkletter, John Payne and Spike Jones. Nothing like todays slot cars
I had a Ferrari Berlinetta in 1/24th scale and a Lotus in 1/32nd. The old man had a 1/24th scale Cobra with a rewound motor. Good times!
What sort of racetrack is that for young Americans to play with? I was under the impression that all of you only knew about an oval left-hand race circuit!
I donated my AFX set a few years ago, good times
I actually built some model airplanes that would fly on the straight, corners were tricky. The pickup was on a rod out in front so the plane could get off the track without losing power. This was round 1965. Some of the tracks were huge.
Have you seen what this has become?
