  1. We were just talking about “collecting” pop bottles and cans for a little jingle in our pockets when we were kids.

  2. I remember when I worked the soda pop bottle & wooden case ‘futures’ market. The year was 1963 and a pop.bottle fetched 2 cents a wooden bottle case 28 cents. No construction site trash pile was safe from this forager. Well I had it on good authority that beginning July 1st the redemption value was going up to 5cents per bottle & a whopping $1.05 per wood case. Woo hoo that date was a couple months off and I was hoarding my bounty for a big payday. I was gonna be in tall tall cotton. I even got some of my redemption stores to sell me their bottles at 2 cents during the period prior to the July 1 increase date. How many bottles did this 8 year old collect? Pop was getting a bit miffed because he couldn’t park in the garage anymore. He wanted to know what the heck was going on. When I revealed my plan he jutted his jaw out a bit and shook his head in the affirmative. A full wood case return went from 76 cents to $2.25. I scrounged 82 full cases of returns. Cases were a find because now you had something to carry yer bottles in and it fit well between the high rise handle bars on my bike. Held secure by an old belt. I had way more bottles than cases though. That Rupp Cub mini bike was getting closer by the day.
