Prices at the local ealmart were $14 for 12 x 1 liter jars (clear regular mouth) last september, now they are $22 for the same case.
My local wally world has Qt size for $2.68 each. No 64 oz. Plenty of 16oz, 8 and 4 oz. I have a couple doz. 16oz sized jars I’ve saved from a certain brand of spaghetti sauce. Lids and rings are on my list for the next trip there.
Nemo, Which certain brand of spag sauce? They work well for hot water bath and pressure canning? Inquiring minds wish to know.
Yeah jars are not the issue,we’ve been canning both water bath and pressure for decades. It’s the lids you need to buy in bulk and it’s honestly been an issue for the last couple years. Scored a large quantity from Uline last fall and feel good about having what we need.
Agreed Klaus. Lids could be a problem when I run out of my extensive supply. Haven’t seen just lids on the selves for quite some time. Thinking of investing in some reusable seals, like the Tattler brand.
We have been gathering jars from the local flea markets and family friends. Washed and de-labeled a couple dozen today that will be used in a vacuum sealer setup inspired by Phil’s post a while back. Stocked up on name brand flats and rings quite a while back and picked up some Tattler flats too. According to what I have read there is a learning curve to using them.BIL said steer clear of the cheap China flats and rings because his wife had several failures with them last season.
Last summer was my first foray with pressure canning in 50 years since helping mom and I now appreciate even more what she did to keep us fed.

Right on.
The Wifely Unit freaks out if I even mention canning.
She has led a very sheltered life.
I am also just tickled to death to hear someone actually made one of those vacuum sealers from my post!!
Phil, If you want some photos of the sealer hit me up on the email. Put it together from the flea market and parts laying around the shop. It has a real steampunk look to it.
