Mostly Cajun, All American and Opinionated

1961 – FCC Chairman Newton N. Minow gives his Wasteland Speech about the crap on TV:

But when television is bad, nothing is worse. I invite each of you to sit down in front of your own television set when your station goes on the air and stay there, for a day, without a book, without a magazine, without a newspaper, without a profit and loss sheet or a rating book to distract you. Keep your eyes glued to that set until the station signs off. I can assure you that what you will observe is a vast wasteland. You will see a procession of game shows, formula comedies about totally unbelievable families, blood and thunder, mayhem, violence, sadism, murder, western bad men, western good men, private eyes, gangsters, more violence, and cartoons. And endlessly commercials — many screaming, cajoling, and offending. And most of all, boredom. True, you’ll see a few things you will enjoy. But they will be very, very few. And if you think I exaggerate, I only ask you to try it.”

  1. TV has been a wasteland since the 60’s. It just has gotten worse over the millennials.
Nothing new on the boob tube in a long time. Just my point of view.
Have a Merry Mother’s day out there.

  2. That’s why we dumped TV six or seven years ago. We have nice big screen sitting in our living room hooked to nothing.

    • You should connect it to a PC, running Firefox w/ an adblocker. You can then watch anything online without having to suffer through ads.

  3. And still it got worse after that. He must be Ray Epps father in law.

  4. It is now year 20 since I stopped watching TV. It’s hard not to be exposed to it, frequently blaring away in doctors waiting rooms, diners, et cetera, but I try to ignore it, though it is irksome.
I don’t bother to visit people who insist on having the TV on white I’m there. I bet that others think that I’m extreme, too bad.

  5. That was written in 1961! …back when TV did have a few good shows! I am fairly certain that the way I watch TV now will soon end since I DVR the few shows I do like and skip the commercials. If streaming something requires me to watch the commercials, I decline….it’s not worth it to me.

  6. Here’s what I notice. An endless series of commercials about junk food and junk drinks interspersed with commercials about all the drugs you’ll have to take from being sick from eating and drinking all that crap not to mention the mental illness you get just from watching TV. I also notice they have commercials for medications that don’t even mention what illness the drug is supposed to treat! Ask your doctor if revolta is right for you! The worst part is knowing that the companies that sponsor all this are succeeding. Look around. Drug stores and fast food joints. How many drug stores should we really need? There is a CVS or Walgreens on every corner and every grocery store also has a pharmacy.

  7. i hadn’t turned on the tube for a year at least , I had open heart surgery recently and there wasn’t a lot to do but watch T.V. to pass the time. It is still a waste of time. Even the better stuff (History) was formula written for a fourth grade educated person. T.V. ought to be the absolute definition of unrealized potential. There is so much good information that could be shared but its all lame quiz shows , stupid comedies , gory crime shows , or some kind of sports or “news” programming . Not to mention the constant unrelenting stream of advertisements . Not worth the time .

  8. I haven’t watched TV on a regular basis since 1993. I have a computer connected to my 50″ tv for use as a monitor during the workday, and with an adblocker, an ad-free video monitor the rest of the time. I typically watch user generated content where people actually make things, like:
    Bad Obsession Motorsport
    Samson Boat Co.
    SuperFastMatt
    Cutting Edge Engineering
    Nik Rijavec

If you know of other channels where talented people dao amazing things, I want to know.
