We used to have plausible deniability. There have always been problems, but you used to be able to look at it with a degree of optimism.
The rot and decay are now much more pronounced. Not sure if it is my sharp sense of reality and keen observation skills as I get older, or if it is simply the system no longer being able hide the signs of the impending downfall.
