  1. All kinds of lids fit canning jars, Mason jars, you name it.

Plastic and cold ain’t a good combo.

    • Down in ‘Bama I use to have put PB in the refer so the bugs didn’t eat all my peanut butter and it didn’t seem to bother them

  2. I use old peanut butter jars for holding my reloading stuff. and screws and other odds and ends because it to see what is in them.
never thought about using them for canning.
they are great for holding clean and primed brass as well. bullet heads and cast bullets as well. and I have a lot of old jars filled with stuff.
I get the big jars as the dogs love the stuff, add to treats and whatnot.
that and I keep a bit around the house as a backup food. keep a smaller jar in the truck for the same reason, with a spoon of course !

  3. Depends on what you mean by “canning”.
If you water can or pressure can, you need to use the real two part lids (and only once) because you make a vacuum and it needs to be sealed well.
If you’re going to ‘can’ and put the stuff in the freezer, you could probably get away with plastic lids.

We’re at about 600′ above sea level in S. central Tx and I have trouble pressure canning because of the siphoning (losing liquid) because it gets too hot and boils too much out of the jars- which can compromise the seal when it cools down and is supposed to ‘pop’ when the lid gets sucked down from the vacuum when it cools down.

    • Same here. Central Texas just over 700 ft. But the housemouse found out the change in the lid seal material was causing more failures to seal all over the place. She would boil the lids. Now just washed in warm water and Dawn. We still have more failures than the old lids.

  4. I have had many glass containers of liquid break when freezing.

The plastic Pnut butter jugs are great for many things because they give a little when dropped.

  5. I have been diligently saving the plastic mayo lids that fit small-mouth jars; my wife has been diligently tossing them in the trash when I’m not looking.

  6. 1. If you’re putting your canning jars in the freezer you’ve missed the point entirely.

    2. New lids every other year max.

  7. I tried a new Jiff PB lid. It was too big. We just use the white lids found at WallyWorld.
