A long time ago my good friend Edward was accepted to medical school. I was happy for him, but his then-girlfriend got airs about it. She made a big deal about “You have to have the smartest people as doctors. After all, you PUT YOUR LIFE in your doctor’s hands!”
This could not be allowed to stand. “You’re 21, Ed and I are 22, and we’re all healthy. We don’t even need doctors right now. You know who I DO ‘trust with my life’ multiple times a day? My freaking brake mechanic. If he fucks up, not only could I get hurt, I could kill other people. Tell me who’s more important.”
Man was she pissed. Wouldn’t talk to me for months. So it was a win twice over.
PS, now that I personally am an MD (with literally a decade of post-MD training, yet) — I still feel the same way.
our world today is like that. a whole lot of people are need to keep the wheels going the right way. like the guy who checks the power lines, or maybe the gas guy
but a doctor ? people have lived a long time without them.
try going without food for a couple of days and get back to us.
a lot of people are just stupid. might have a lot of book learning as my granddad
used to say, but not the sense to get in out of the rain
Paul Harvey, from Oklahoma by the way, said it best.
