When I was a little boy (I’m 74 now} My Granfpa & I would be toolin’ down the country roads & I’d smell manure & say pew. My stoic old Dutchman Grandpa would reply,”smells like money to me”. He was right.
Yup. A dying breed for sure.
My mom’s side of the family spent 7 or 8 generations farming in Blue Earth County, MN. Right up until about the early ’70s. They settled that land when America was a very young country and that was still the frontier. Those were some tough, old school German immigrants.
A part of me wishes I had grown up completely in that way of life instead of the “modern” life I was encouraged to persue. Oh well, wish in one hand, and you know the rest… At least I got to grow up near the country side, in a small farm town. Kept me from being a complete city boy.
He was a native of Tulsa and still missed. He would be aghast at what’s going on. His other essays on subjects are a little more priceless than George Carlin’s essays.
