I was paid to jump when the damn phone rang– had to be answered by the third ring. After retiring it took a bit of thought to overcome the conditioning, but I have learned that if you let it ring, it will quit soon enough. Now of course, with caller ID and an electronic secretary to take messages, I tend to congratulate those I do answer: “You’re one of the few people that I will pick up on.”
