After much finagling with the starting and stopping the vid to try to determine how fast that black car skedaddled, I got a little over five(5) seconds. I did try to blow the vid up to see the trap time but it was blurrier blown up than regular size which is unreadable. I’m thinking that can’t be right. So I searched for “What is the funny car quarter mile time record” and got this:
The record time for the quarter mile is 3.22 seconds according to this vid. Granted it’s a jet powered car, which I don’t think qualifies as a true “funny car”.
The fastest wheel driven 1/4 mile record is, from what I could find, 341.68MPH and 3.84 seconds. Damn quick. Don’t blink.
Top Fuel and Funny car quarter mile strips are not 1320 feet. Back in 2008 they were shortened to 1000 feet because the cars were getting too quick and fast.
A carrier takeoff is jet power plus catapault power and traction isn’t really a factor.
A jet doesn’t have to deliver torque to the pavement which makes this more impressive.
Now I have this idea for a steam cat to launch funny cars.
We’re gonna need a longer track.
