Victory gardens are growing by leaps and bounds these days.
Yes I see lots of newbies getting into gardening around me and Oklahoma encourages water barrels with some cities having workshops for them. Unlike some of the other commie states that ban water barrels.
You can get 500 gallon potable water tanks at home de-pot. Not too expensive and very light when empty. I heard you can rig up PVC catchment tubes (see boobtube for design so the grit goes to the ground with drain plug with a reverse Y just about tank top with line going to tank for fill) to a gutter if we don’t run out p PV with all the train derailments.
Thanks for the info BC, I will check out the tanks at HD. Looks like an interesting week of weather in Oklahoma.
Not complying with government diktat can be very satisfying.
Danger! It’s habit forming. ;o)
Contageous too.
yup. food has always been the weapon of choice with tyrants.
about 20 years ago now, I started learning how to garden. not as easy as it sounds
either. did a lot of reading on it. and then tried to put it into use.
but I did learn what worked and what did not. as far as rain barrels go.
look into a first flush diverter. easy to make really with pvc pipe.
the neat thing about pvc is how easy it is to work with. I used 4 inch pipe
about 3.5 feet long, end cap with a drain in the bottom. for the top of it
cut a piece about 5-6 inches long and split it length wise.
heated with a heat gun to make it flat. used a hole saw to cut to fit inside the 4 inch tee fitting. drill a 2 inch hole in the center of it. when it was put together
make sure to add a tennis ball in there. that acts as the valve to make the water go into your barrel. the first 2-3 gallons has all the crap off your roof in it.
you really don’t want that in your rain barrel. and if the plastic of your barrels is thick enough. thread them. I have found it is easy to glue a backing plate of plastic behind it . I even had 3 barrel setup in a row. and one by itself for manure
tea. best way I found to kill off weeds is to put them in a black plastic trash bag in the sun to break them down into compost. cooking them like that seem to kill any seeds from them.
save your coffee grounds ! they are great for earth worms= good for your garden ! had a deal going with the local 7-11 for all of their old grounds
my garden grew like crazy that year ! like 7-10 foot tomato plants ?
and maybe the best cherry tomato’s I ever tasted.
growing even a little of your own food is a big plus.
canning it all up is a lot of work. the ball blue book is your best bet .
get good canner. spend the money ! they last a long time, the good ones.
wish I remembered more of helping my grandmother when she was canning
too young then. spent a lot of time snapping beans to can on the porch though.
growing your own food will make you rethink a lot about life as we know it.
remember this. these people want to RULE over us. not govern like now.
one final thought here. get a good pistol and holster. wear it everyday.
learn how to be accurate with it. a pistol will give you time to get to your rifle.
you do have a rifle right ? if not. get one. same thing, learn how to use it.
clean it. keep ammo for it as well. without ammo, all you have is a fancy rock or club. people with rifles do not get in cattle cars or stand up against a wall.
that is their final plan for us after all. think, plan, then do
Thanks for the detailed instructions on water barrels. I need to link some. I have one downspout that is a gusher and one barrel is not enough. I started using coffee grounds last year and was amazed at the difference in the soil and plants.
