Coming Along Nicely

With any luck I should be able to start gnawing the stitches out about Wednesday.

It’s weird but that hasn’t hardly hurt since it quit bleeding.

Since I have laid it open clear to the bone before I’m kinda wondering if maybe there isn’t some nerve damage there at this point.

Whatever, the damn splint is driving me crazy and I want that fucker gone but I can’t get rid of it until the stitches are out.

Pain in the ass.

  1. Don’t recall the name, but Costco carries (like, I mean, like so does everyone, duh!) this patch with something like novacaine, about a dollar per patch, that’s fulla pain killer. Wrap one of those babies around your pinky and get back to loving life. Salloon paws or something like that.

  2. At least this time you didn’t staple it closed yourself. Hope they gave you a tetanus shot.

    • Yep, got yet another tetanus shot. I can never remember the last time.
      Smooches honey.

  3. Phil, your buddy Unfuck/Sternie is in hospital recovering from a heart attack. Allegedly, he is tormenting the redheaded nurses. I hope that he recovers well. I’ve had 3 MIs myself, they are no fun at all.

    • Thanks for the heads up.
I swapped emails with him a couple weeks ago because I hadn’t seen anything out of him for over a month and he was doing OK then.
      Damn the bad news.

    • Thank you for the info Johno. I’ve been worried about him since he went radio silent. Prayers up for him.

  4. I could never keep stitches in as long as they said I should. My wounds always start swelling up around the stitches a few days before they are supposed to come out, which causes me to take them out early while I can still get to them with tiny scissors. After I remove the stitches, the swelling goes away.

  5. Cedreq, make sure it’s yanked by somebody used to starting recalcitrant old Briggs & Stratton motors. You don’t want the job half-done now. Hey, you know any Austrian nurses that like wearing high-heels and fish-net stockings? If so, direct them to the Viennese Asylum to check in on Unfuck. Points if they’re male nurses, double points if they restrain him and perform an artistic razoring of his groin, in case another entry port is needed.

  6. The back side of a finger has fewer nerves than the tactile side….thus less pain. Also as we age we feel less pain…..and heal slower. As long as the wound doesn’t get infected it will heal, eventually. Just keep it clean and protected. Putting Vitamin E oil on it will help it heal better with less scar tissue to interfere with mobility of the joint.

    • Very good advice, Dan. I see that there is no swelling/redness due to infection which is a VERY good thing. And, Yes, most likely nerve damage but not on the tactile side. Phil, that Vit. E is paramount if you want a completely mobile thumb. don’t skip it.

Keep it clean and protected for another MONTH and you’ll be in good shape. Don’t worry about neuropathy, all us Old(er) Farts know all about it – comes with the territory.

Oh, and pulling out your own stitches is fun! Ask me how I know…

      • I can do it! I have a nice clean set of suture forceps and suture scissors….

        • Suture removal kits were considered a disposable, one time use kit where I used to work. I’ve got dozens of those teeny tiny scissors and hemostats. I’ve managed to give away some of them to fly tying friends.

          • My set is old, when mom was a nurse, WW2, she gave me her medical equipment, even the stones they use to sharpen syringes… imagine doing that today?

        • I have fingernail clippers and I know how to use ’em!

Once sterilized, they actually work quite well getting down into the knot and clipping it off. Yank the suture with hemostats or really small needle-nose pliers, and there ya are!

That’ll be $50 for the consult. Leave it on the counter when you check out, please.

          • I’ve pulled out many stitches in my day.
If this wasn’t work related I would do it myself but I don’t want to hear the bitching and moaning.

      • Phil, what Igor said about protecting it another month. I didn’t and busted the joint open again…Doc was not a happy camper…something about me being not very bright…

  7. At least yours is back on straight.

Of course, when you cut the joint out, and shatter the bones on either side, you don’t get a lot of say on how it goes back on.
Been 28yrs, and it still hurts when you hit it with a hammer.

  8. Excellent sign, both lower and upper are same color. You are one lucky SOB, well at least the latter part. 😉

  9. Miss Sandy, in his email that I received about a week ago, he said he was told by the docs that it was a mild heartie (IMO, any myocardial infarction is not mild) and he had a stent emplaced. Just think, you missed a golden opportunity for endless snark, if you’d done his pre-op groin shaving! Frau Unfuck may share an image with you. Maybe he is feeling better now, it must have been a week ago by now. The International Nursing Cabal should have all the hot goss, or just contact him direct. I’m pretty sure he knows that he has friends in the US, either as Herr Doktor Unfuck or Herr Stern the Messerschidt, and at least one here in Australia.
