But that’s just a guess after a little quick research I did. Spank me if I’m wrong.
You got it right Elmo, a Hoary Marmot. It was taken in Alaska on a water pipeline.
Hoary Marmot, Alaska.
I knew it was a marmot but not the kind we have in southeast Idaho that are locally called rock chucks.
A quick internet search found a picture of a similar one.
Well, he is located on a log at present 😉
We have them all over in SW Michigan, I have a few in my back yard off into the ravine. They look slow and fat but let me tell you they can move, our terrier has not been able to catch one yet, not for lack of trying.
Common name is “groundhog” but there are other appellations depending on the part of the country (woodchuck, marmot etc.).
The groundhog is Marmota Monax. They are marmots, but a different species from those out in the far west.
Cajun don’t care. He will just ask “is it good eatin?”
that’s one screwed up looking squirrel
They are the largest ground squirrels.
ha ha sweet
I think it’s in the squirrel family. Muttly treed one a couple weeks ago.
I don’t know if it its good eating but squirrels sure are.
maxxx, it is a squirrel, the largest in the squirrel family. Glad they ain’t the size of ground sloths.
His name is Kevin. He living under my back porch and undermining the back walkway
Hoary marmots must cheat on their spouses a lot.
His name is Walter. He’s usually shy, so you were lucky with the photograph. At that time, he was on the log in his front yard but now he may be anywhere; he’s quick like that.
The video of that one screaming is absolutely hilarious
Hoary marmot. Or, as I misheard from the driver taking us into the backcountry, “hairy varmint.” I was like, yeah, but what of varmint?! Alaska, PNW.
Whistle-pig posing on a telephone pole.
I’ve seen ’em up around tree line in the Rockies.
My guess is that it’s a Hoary Marmot from the northern Rockies.
