You win Bear. I bow to your superior hummingbird whisperer ways. The force is with you. 😁
I had six feeders in my backyard, and some of these birds committed murder. They can be mean fuckers if they want to be. Very territorial. Fun to watch, and feed. The U. S. Airforce wish they could fly half as much….
Yep, they act like humans
We don’t have that many hummers here in Florida but we still try to keep a feeder out for them. The biggest problem here in FL is the heat turns sugar water into wine in a short time. How do you deal with that?
These will empty 2 to 3 feeders a day so all 8 will (4 on another post out of picture) change in less than a week. Mine I only fill with a 1/4 or 1/2 cup and change every 4 or 5 days
About 38 ounces per feeder. Hungry buggers. I have had all kinds of feeders over the years. These are the best and no leaks. Found them at Tractor supply.
NOICE!
No squirrel or cat problems??
Only for the turkeys as you saw the other day
Surprised to see Hummers attracted to clear nectar. Diners to the feeder outside my kitchen window prefer “Chateau Rouge” sweet juice. Any thoughts on their nesting habits? We have a very tall Holly tree that several types of birds use for nesting not to mention protection from predators – sometimes each other!
This is at my friends place. I only have 4 at home. Lots of trees around is the key. I’ve seen nests on documentaries, amazing, some bout as big as a penny. Fell in love with them when I was 17 out in Colorado
We figured 35 – 40 to start this year but lots of babies now. My friend took a close up the other day, male, ruby dot at the base of the throat looked like a bow tie
Sugar water. They are attracted to the nectar of flowers and feeders with sugar water are even more tasty. Don’t buy hummingbird food at the store, it’s a rip off. Just mix sugar and water.
Any particular ratio for the proper mix? My mom has a couple of feeders and has been bemoaning the cost of the bottled “juice”. If there’s a recommended recipe, I’ll pass it along. I certainly enjoy seeing them when I’m over there, they are interesting little birds for sure.
Innerwebz says 4 to 1 but if few and far between and/or the beginning of the season I do three to one.
They know the good stuff
ps I just mix warm tap water and stir good.
If you compete with neighbors just up the sugar a little to entice them.
First hit is always free.
Gas grass or ass, NOBODY rides for free
Dang, i have wasp nests that aren’t that active
So i do 1cup sugar and 4 cups h20 . Here in Arizona I go through a feeder once a day or every other day .
Yep, or slightly more sugar
I have only a few birds at my place so 1 cup water, little over 1/4 cup sugar per feeder and change weekly. Due to the heat, upper 90’s daily.
Wash and rinse feeder with tiny bit of soap at least every other fill, sugar breeds bacteria and next fill goes bad faster.
These feeders hold 32 plus ounces. Mid season it was fill 5 over two days. With the babies it’s now about 3 per day.
Royal Wing brand found the at tractor supply $20 give or take
Here is southern AZ, this time of year, we have migratory fruit bats headed to Mexico. They will drain the hummingbird feeders over night.
I just wish I could get this many hummers a day!
