The Trump administration has launched the first ever national citizenship verification system, creating a centralized federal database that compiles Americans’ personal information including immigration history, Social Security records, and other identifiers into one searchable platform. The system merges data from DHS’ SAVE program with records from SSA, IRS, state DMVs, CMS, HHS, VA, HUD, SNAP, OPM, FinCEN, DOE, and USPS through the work of the DOGE and CIA tech contractor Palantir. The White House’s stated pretext for the move is that it will help ensure that only US citizens are eligible to vote by cross-checking citizenship information across multiple federal agencies.
