A Long Overdue Open Thread

It has been way too long since I opened the place up.

Tons and tons of things have happened since the last one and there is so much coming in the near future that no list could be complete.

What’s been going on in your world ?

Also please share any tips, tricks, old fashioned ways that we should bring back or even just a recipe if you want.

I would really like to see the lurkers step up here and if nothing else, let us know what current conditions are in your area.

I’m going to post a sort of strange video here to open things up.

It may wrinkle a few noses but give it a chance, I really think this is a damn good idea and it’s cheap too.

Alrighty then, jump right in and don’t be bashful.

  1. like he came up with that idea all alone.

Bleah. My wife does most of the cooking so I need this? Not.

    • It’s not a bad idea and it’s just filler material for the open thread.
Told ya it was kind of a weird video.

      • Essentially, containers have become so cheap, and so ubiquitous, they are virtually invisible. Yet they are absolutely indispensable. Nobody keeps any.. well, except some crazy preppers…. use it once, toss in the landfill and get another.
Till there is no other. Really hard to trade some sugar for some salt without having something to put it in.

      • In my family we call those containers Italian Tupperware. I have a pile of them in one of my kitchen cabinets.

        • These are good, and so is a vacuum sealer – get lots and lots of sealable bags while you can, though!

Sealed meats keep a long, LONG time in the freezer…

  2. Actually, that is a good video, ties in very neatly with the food posts you have been sharing with us, and is efficient to boot. Jonah does look like he needs a steak or two, though. chuckling

Hmm, over this way, regular gas is 4.59 to 4.69 depending on which area the station is, checked three grocery stores this week and found they are about 90 % stocked, some items are out, but nothing critical. Most people are quiet and furtive, unsure what is wrong, but sensing something. They will find out soon enough. hee hee

    • I agree with sense of something wrong. I can’t really put my finger on it, but it’s there. It’s like having an itch where you scratch all over the area but don’t “hit the right spot”.

  3. Hey Phil, our island is like most of the country I suspect, appears “normal” but a definite undercurrent of uncertainty and caution. We have dairy goats, chickens and 2 hogs ready to slaughter, a large garden and keep a years supply on hand. We have taught homesteading and sustainable living for nearly 20 years but the last 6 to 8 months has been nonstop people coming to learn how to feed and take care of their own household. Encouraging but also kinda sad that the time to prepare is winding down. I truly appreciate all you do, nice to see how other old guys do it (you’re 2 weeks older than me).
    God bless. TP in SC

    • Hey thanks a bunch for that.
I am somewhat encouraged that you are seeing an influx of folks wanting to learn.
Good onya all the way around for you getting it done right!

      • where did you find this fool ? if that clown has food for a week let alone two ,I be amazed.
20 to 1 he would be starving inside of a week with what he has in his kitchen. he is the type of clown who has to shop every day for dinner, I bet.
and to have that many deli containers, the boy lives on take out. I tried those before, I pass. they not that great.
ball jars on the other hand, or even keeping the food in the jar it came in works well.

        • Large polupropylene buckets with seals in the lid – indespensible and easy to move when TSHTF. Buy bulk wheat and oats, store them that way. DON’T FORGET THE GRINDER!! Hand cranked, BTW…

Go to the Provident Living site for good info:
          https://providentliving.churchofjesuschrist.org/?lang=eng

Yeah, yeah, it’s a Church site, but it’s just about the best for advice for food storage, etc. We’ve had a LOT of experience in this sort of thing, y’know.

  4. Here in Southern Oregon most things are available as far as I can tell and what my wife tells me from her shopping. The best diesel price I have found for my pickup is 5.25. We have lots of good vegetable starts in the greenhouse and plans for a large garden. A definite feeling of unease throughout most people I know. The new “ministry of truth” just adds to it.

  5. What a waste of shelf space! Now if he had used square containers…

Here in the Phoenix Metro Valley stock in the stores is not any worse than during the Great Toilet Paper Shortage of 2020. My favorite brand of soup is up is up 45.5% in 90 days, produce is up about 10%. Bread just took a 7% hike. Fuel is 4.99 at Chevron and 4.19 at Circle K. Used cars are expensive as new ones and rent is even more stupid high than usual. If I had to move, I would have to head back to Kansas to afford the rent and deal with all the allergy crap I don’t have to deal with here.

  6. 70-hour work week, tired. Some little good done for customers so there’s that.

High school senior in my district in WA died in his sleep this week. No details but we can all guess why… because young men always did die at a fantastic rate in their sleep, you just don’t remember it well enough you Old Phartte. The surrounding students just shrug and move on, the new normal, except for the poor young man’s parents and siblings and that the kid has lost everything he had and everything he would have had.

Did you note we’re now at war with Russia given we’re directly aiding the other side? Lend-Lease and Lusitania, U-boats and nukes, oh my!

Supermarket prices up amazingly recently except for a few staples like some kinds of rice on sale. $7 for a container of mayonnaise for crying out loud. Only to get worse.

  7. Boonies in east Texas. My garden is so far a failure as I’ve been dealing with chemo over the past year; just finished the last one two weeks ago. I guess the next week or two will tell the tale (I only plant tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers). So the missus has been shopping out veggies for canning and pickling; we sell at the local farmer’s market. It will have it’s season opener next weekend and there is an expectation of a busy season for all of us regulars. Fuel average about $3.69 lately for 87 proof gas. Store shelves are mostly stocked but not deep. Weirdest thing was the Frito shortage we had. None to be found anywhere for a couple of weeks. Help Wanted signs everywhere but I can only guess as to why. Likely related to the price of oil; the oilfield draws a lot of bodies to the pumps when there’s a boom going, training schools must be full. My son works in the services side of the oilfield and says they can’t find enough warm bodies.

  8. pa highlands here, diesel went from 5.29 to 5.49 inside of a week. fuel oil is close to 5 bucks per gallon I am told. I have 2 full tanks from last winter at 3 something.
rather use the wood stoves for heat, QUIET, even heat that last a long time as the noise box hot air heater does not and needs to run every 30 minutes or so.
from what I am told, there are no wood stoves for sale around here and the ones that are for sale are either junk or worse. my firewood guy sold out last year.
he never did that before, he cutting wood like mad this year too.
he said he got a few cords of white oak set aside for me, nice guy.
price went up on firewood too for most people, I buy a fair bit and he cuts me a break on it. that and I pay in cash too. that helps a lot too.
lot of people give him checks, so the bank knows as well as the feds
and for xmas I gave him 10 gallons of high test. his truck with a load gets like 8 mpg which sucks. he always be fair with me, so I try to be the same to him.
too many clowns sell green firewood and want top dollar for junk wood too.
the clowns sell anything they cut down as firewood around here. food
for for the most part is still on the shelfs around here, prices jumped about 20-30 cents per as a rule though. ever since moving up here, I have being buying more than we need each time we go shopping in town. if there a sale on something we use, I stock up on it. so now we have a fully stocked larder here.
coffee has gone up as well !!! I think there is close to 4-5 cases of it downstairs
now, along with filters, sugar and creamer to go with it. got to have my coffee.
the local store got some water containers in, 5 gallon ones , picked up two
to add to the others I have already. water filters will be a must.
I bought a big berkley a few years ago. they work great, you can clean the filters too, but I have a couple of extra sets of new ones as well.
it is a bit slow, but it does work very well. lots of iron in the water around here.
ammo will be going up or rather the tax on it will by the will of biden. or rather the ones pulling his strings. might be a bit late in the game to find and make friends, but you better try to find a few people who think close to the way you do about shit that is happening in this country. that part is easy for me as around here there are a lot of vets close to my age who do not trust the system.
starts with meeting one guy and then meeting his friends and the like.
after shooting at the local range one time, got to meet a few younger guys who wanted to know how to point shoot. something I was taught way back in the 1/503 days. so, I took like 2 hours showing then how it was done or at least the way I was taught it. even they know something is wrong ,they just not sure what. we talked and I think they got the idea and are going to start stocking
up on food and things. we need to get others to realize what is happening and just what they can do about it to help themselves. anyway, the young guy policed the empty brass up and gave it to me as I reload as well.
as for the “news” well , for the most part I listen with half a ear as my dad would say. we are on the wrong side of the russia thing, we send enough cash to that place to redo all the roads there. seems like all of the “aid” “we” send over there goes in someone pocket. doesn’t really matter anymore as “our money” will be worthless here soon enough. no one can just keep printing money and expect it to keep any value. yet they done little else since 2008. I try to keep a little cash around but gave up on the idea of money in the bank. stuff is better than money.
case in point, about a year ago, they had a sale on Mapp gas and propane tanks, the size for a hand held torch . bought like a dozen of each, last week at the local store Mapp gas was 12 bucks and change for the same size I got for like 4 bucks the year before.
you guys might do better in the long haul to get whatever you think you might want/need before the price of everything goes up.
diesel is 5.50 here now, and EVERYTHING moves by diesel today in this country.
remember this, food is the weapon of choice for tyrants and has bein all thru history. by growing your own food and helping other do the same, we are putting a glitch in their master plan for us to be eating bugs and shit.

  9. Western IL, north of St. Louis MO

Gas prices hovering around 4 bucks, up and down 15-20 cents. 30-40 cents cheaper over in MO.

Lots of Help Wanted signs, but few takers, cause everyone is short-handed it seems.

Rain and more rain, farmers chomping at the bit to get corn – beans planted.

Just back from Webster SD on Thursday with a 16-ft trailer full of 32 colonies of bees, to increase my operation to ( I hope) near 100 by summers end. Over-winter losses were about 30 %, not catastrophic, and way better than the 60-70 % that I’ve heard occurred in some places. Hoping also to break in grandson ( 17 ) as a Beekeepers Helper for the summer. Two grand-daughters too, ( 20 and 15 ).

First local Farmers Market one week from today. The 15 Y. O. G-daughter will once again be my main assistant there.

  10. 26 acres of corn planted Thursday. 50 acres of grass maybe gets seed today. Grass should have been in 6 weeks ago. I’d say we’re 5 degrees below daily average. Potato guys planting worked long into the evening. I think they are 10 days behind normal start to planting, and it’s not going into nicely worked ground. Too damp.
Instant coffee was $6.99 now $8.99.
Daily listing of farm diesel (full truckload) price has been stuck at $4.1964 for more than two weeks.
Rolled Feed corn is $394 ton spot. A $281 contract price seemed high at the time, today it would be $420. 15 rail cars are either stuck in Montana, or have not even loaded yet. That’s more than 75 trucks that now have to drive SOMEWHERE to get enough to keep the mills going, IF they can find drivers.
Inslee is still a Cunt. Not sure how they heat the governors mansion, but he seems to think the rest of us don’t need natural gas.

  11. Phil,
The wife and I are at our corttage in Norhtern Michigan (Roscommon area)
Our son is a professional Pastry Chef, and comes up here as a base to forage for mushrooms. He leaves tons of the containers, I think they are what are used in professional kitchens. As far as supplies around here, no shortages, yet. The shevles are stockd better here than in Southeast Michigan, but I think that is a staffing issue.
Up here there are a lot of retirees working in the store (this is an area people retire to), downstate, there seem to be more of the staff pushing carts with bags on them, as curbside pickup is really big down there and the young people who used to stock the shelves, are now doing the opposite. Gas is down a bit around here, as we haven’t moved to “summer blend” yet

  12. Had a weird experience yesterday. I was doing a 10hr drive home from a work trip. At the half way point had to go through a smaller city. I ran into a walmart mega center for a pee break and saw they had pork chops on sale. 6 chops for $7.5 so i grabbed 2 packs and then also grabbed bread an a couple other items while i was there. The cashier (only one open) interrigated tje lady ahead of me about why she was buying each item in her cart. When it was my turn she tried chewing me out over having 2 packs of chops. She said shortages happen because people take more than their fair share. I ignored her butI paid cash because i decided the conversation was concerning enough i didnt want debit card data on file.

  13. Not enough hours in the day, everyday. Things were suppose to slow down in retirement, hah. Most days start around 4:30am and go until my ass is dragging out my tracks. It’s 11:40pm as I’m writing this. There’s always something to put a monkey wrench in my plans.

Take today for instance I get a call about twenty to seven in the morning from the youngest daughter. She’s in the nearest blue hive, almost two hours away and has a flat on her car as she is heading into class. There goes almost five hours of the morning. Thankfully she didn’t have trouble on the drive in and damaged the tire basically in the school parking lot. And yes, she could have put on the spare herself and driven to a tire shop to get it fixed but 1) that’s what dads do, and 2) she spends around three and a half hours a day traveling + five to six hours of class a day, five days a week and didn’t need to spend any more unsafe time in a blue hive than absolutely necessary. Just a couple of days ago some scraggly ass guy approached her as she got out of her car in the morning to inform her of how unsafe it was for her to park where she did that early in the morning and he had been missing class for the last two weeks because he was in jail and he had been trying to figure out how to approach her to ask her out. Now if that doesn’t set off alarm bells nothing will and they won’t let her carry on campus.

As I intimated over on BCE’s blog, normalcy bias is so strong here folks are going to need a huge clue bat to wake up and by then it will be too late. Doesn’t matter the topic, potable water, food shortages, self defense, supply shortages, political malfeasance, global issues of the so called elites, and on and on and on. We’ve still got folks driving around by themselves all masked up. I keep getting “the talk” about getting the jab from a few folks. I used to just tolerate them, now I have a militant response and I think they are getting the message leave me the fuck alone. People wander around in the day to day grind without a thought of what’s coming. I’m outa giveafucks. Don’t come looking for a hand out and it’s too late for a hand up.

Fuel is up, gas is running $4.48/gal and up. Dropped $140 filling up the pickup today. Propane has really jumped. I was filling two 20 pounders for around $15. The last five refills have run right at $26~$27. I burned $150 in propane in the last month keeping the greenhouse heated.

The weather has really been kicking our ass this year. One week it feels like spring the next it’s mid winter temps. We lost around a fifth of our pole bean starts night before last and that was under a wrap over the whole bean trellis. Now I’m running a heater under there as well. I already had the spuds in the ground and I’m hoping the freeze didn’t hit the sprouts this year. We’ll have to wait to see the the impact on the onions. If it doesn’t warm up pretty soon the greenhouse is going to be a mess because we’ve already up potted twice on some things and they need to be set out.

We don’t do a lot of store shopping for food so I haven’t kept up on the day to day price situation but prices are up across the board from what I remember from a few weeks ago. Availability is down as well. There were obvious gaps in stocking levels with lots of empty shelf space. I walked away empty handed on several items, both food and hardware related. I’m about 5 to 7 weeks out on butchering again but after pricing a package of burger, right at $24 for a small package, I may just move up the slaughter date to like next week. I honestly don’t know how folks are going to be able to afford food the way its going.

It’s a real shock for me to observe as we raise and grow and put up at least ninety percent of our annual staples. Folks that make a trip or three to the store every day for what the need are going to be in a real pickle here shortly.

Well here it is Saturday morning. I fell asleep with the computer on my lap writing this last night. It’s a wonder I didn’t knock it off on the floor.

I wrote once a short article about coming full circle, think I shared it over on Ken’s blog, and the big one this month is moving my mother into our house. Talk about fun in the sun. She’s going through a second childhood and can’t remember from one minute to the next what she’s talking about. I just took her car away from her. Talk about a dog fight but what am I going to do, leave in a cardboard box on the side of the street?

I had several other things I was going to write about but they’re really of no consequence, just the reality of day to day life and the way shit goes and it’s the same for all of us.

None of us are getting any younger, our skill sets are severely under appreciated by the younger crowd, hell they don’t even know or understand a small fraction of what it really takes to live. The oldest daughter came home the other day and they had some show up they were ripping apart about some tik tok (sp) influencer or some shit and I have to tell you, we are in a deep pile of shit if that’s what is going to be taking care of things when us old timers are gone.

I’m going to stop, this is turning into a whine and bitch fest and none of you need to read that kind of crap. You have enough of it in your own lives.

The best of the weekend to you all. Keep your heads down and remember to check your six.

See you on the other side.
    wes
    wtdb

    • Not a whine. I enjoy reading your stuff.
Hope things go as smoothly as possible with your mother. The transition from being the child to the caregiver is never easy on either party.

Re The Jab. I’ve said at BCE’s place that I finally told my own docs (I was pretty sick last year) that I’d consider anyone coming at me with a syringe of vaxx as intent to commit grievous bodily harm. That stopped two from ever bringing it up again. The third required clarification. A friend (also a cardiologist) said to me yesterday, “as a rule, MDs are the smartest stupid people.” I dunno about “smartest” but the overall sentiment is correct.

  14. Here in Sonoma (Karen) County CA, gas 5++ a gallon, stores shelves still mostly stocked. Lots of dipshits driving alone wearing masks.

  15. In central Florida. All is good, economy is strong here. Mostly stocked shelves. Very little crazy compared to the other places I travel for work. New job, lots of hours. Got a small garden in this spring. Should have green beans in the next week. Tomatoes not far behind. Bought a new canning pot at Wally World for $25 or so. Nice pot, too. I think it was here I read the article about intercropping. I was going to give that a shot when i plant this summer.

    https://www.theorganicprepper.com/intercropping/

I was already planted for the spring crop when I read the article. I’m also going to expand the garden during the summer. It’s very small now. Didn’t have time to do a bigger one.

Im stocked up on rice and beans for long-term food storage. I vacuum seal them. I’ve been doing this for about a decade and never had an issue. I rotate through every so often. Anyone have any storage issues they’ve dealt with?

Also, I can tomato sauce. I’ve never used citric acid or lemon juice with it. Never had a problem in the past. I was reading the other day how tomatoes have been engineered to have less citric acid, so it has to be added so botulism doesn’t grow in them! I was using some of the sauce about 6months old just before that and it tasted fine and didn’t get sick. As expected. Any thoughts on that?

    • Depends on whose seeds you buy. Regular (Burpee) seeds are all genmod, the Patriot Seeds I buy are not and they can be harvested for seeds for next year. YMMV.

As for storage issues, IF you seal the containers, and in the case of the large poylprop buckets you drop some liquid Nitrogen in them and wait for them to stop outassing then seal, you should be golden! Nuttin’ like inert gas to slow down oxidation!

As for fuel, if you’re like me you have a Motor Home with a 97 gallon gas (NOT diesel) tank thaqt you throw in some Sta-Bil and just start the engine for 5 minutes every three months… And I also have 6 5 gallon jerry cans (Blitz plastic ones) for auto use that I cycle through.

Remember to have wood heating as a standby!

    • Dave, if you are unsure about the acid in your tomatoes just pressure can them. My mother always pressure canned her tomatoes. She was a very cautious about what she canned, no open-kettling, it was usually pressure-canned with very little water-bathing. We lived at 1200 ft. so it was 12 pounds pressure for 10 minutes for the pints.

    • I vacuum seal and freeze tomatoes and spaghetti sauce. I have used the sealer for a couple of years and absolutely love it! You can vacuum items flat and store on its side thereby saving room.

Pro tip about vacuum sealing dry beans and rice: freeze the dry goods for approximately 48 hours then seal. This kills whatever bugs lurk in the package.

  16. Here in the big city, gas is just under $4/gallon, the grocery store is mostly stocked, and has not yet raised prices on everything (but when they do raise a price it could be 30% higher), and the suburb it is in is increasing their sales tax to build shiny new recreation facilities.

Husband has his little community garden plot again. I have some flax seeds to try to grow at home. They are the ones sold to eat and I’m not sure they’ll sprout. I’m concerned in the longer term about our ability to make textiles.

Minneapolis 3rd precinct 2020 riot zone: some businesses were rebuilt (Autozone), and some are still vacant lots (Minnehaha Liquor). Virtue signalling all over the place. Crime is up throughout the metro area, almost back to the Murderapolis murder rate, but now with carjackings.

  17. Eastern Edge of the Virginia Piedmont here, lights of the ‘Swamp’ are visible at Night, and will bee More Visible if the Bear sends a Can of Sunshine one of these Days. The vast majority of people who are not Old-School ‘Rural’ around here are Swamp Creatures of some sort, bought into the Coronascam and now the Ukraine/RussiaRussiaRussia/Vodka Man Bad Meme. Still see lots of masked covidiots, but Stores here have given up on the ‘Masks Required’ B.S.

Normalcy Bias/Cluelessness is Off the Scale, and if you ask any of these normies “What will you Do when you See the Flash?” they start Reeeing about how a) the Russians would Never Dare to attack FUSSA, and b) the “Military” would Promptly Defeat them. This Area is too far away from the Swamp to have any Direct Effects of a Nuke, but close enough for there to be Screaming F’kk’n Chaos in a matter of Minutes.

Plenty of Food in the Stores, but Week-to-Week you see minor Shortages and Substitutions. Nobody seems to be Stocking up, and when I do, (Soup or Canned Veggies on Sale? I push the Cart to the Shelf and Sweep the Cans off by the Dozens) Same with Rice, Beans, Canned goods. I get Ugly Looks from the people in the Checkout Line behind Me, as it takes 15 Minutes for the Cashier to Scan a Basket full of small Items. And Everything is more Expensive on a Week-to-Week basis.

Diesel Fuel has just gone Up 40-45 Cents around here OVERNIGHT, at every station. The Bulk Fuel Dealer that I Know is no longer willing/able to Undercut the Retailers by the usual 20-25 Cents, and he says that there are Distribution Shortages forcing the Spot-Price Fuel (that is Excess to his Monthly ‘contract price’ Order) causing the big, sudden Price Increases.

A Friend who is a Paving Contractor (Biiig Co., VDOT ‘Interstate Rated’) uses 5-7,000 Gallons a DAY in his Trucks and Equipment. A Road Tanker to his Shop every Weekday. He has a ‘Controlled Shutdown’ plan in place for when he can’t get Fuel on a regular basis.

  18. Not seeing a lot of difference up here in the Frozen Freakin’ North. Still have 12-18 inches of snow on the ground, but it’s going fairly quickly. Might be able to get something in the ground by June. Thank heavens it doesn’t get dark till August. Unleaded is down a few cents from 5.00 to 4.75 depending on where you look. Fuel oil runs 4.15 or so, closer to 5.00 if you have it delivered. Odd thing was gas was cheaper down near Deathray and he’s in the boonies. Stores are about normal…I live pretty much at the end of the asphalt; things not being in stock isn’t uncommon. I have a metric ton of those deli containers. They’re cheap on the Zon and I put all kinds of things in them. They’re lighter than jars, easier to store empty, washable and usually don’t break if dropped unless they’re frozen. They’re a daily use thing for me as far as food goes; my long term stuff is in mylar & totes, ball jars or sealed polypro buckets. Thing to consider: semi’s become very slow single shots when the mags run empty. You need a way to refill mags quickly if you’re relying on a semi, especially if you’re solo. You’ll have to go head down at some point to refill. AR’s & AK’s are nice for quantity of fire, but look around your area. When it comes down to it, will you really need to be reaching out 300+ yards? Wheelguns, leverguns & pumps can all be reloaded fairly quickly from loose rounds with a bit of practice.

  19. In east TN here. Seeing a lot of help wanted signs here too. Also seeing regular shortages in the store. We are rather rural her so maybe that’s why. But it is always a crapshoot whether I get what’s on my list or not.

Gas is anywhere from $3.89 to $4.20. diesel is any where from $4.89 to 5.50.

All food is up depending on product 30% to double.

We live outside of town and it has historically been very quiet but hearing sirens a lot more now. No idea why specifically.

I am seeing more people masking up again. And yes the idiots alone in their cars here too! However the majority here never wore them. Our mayor made it personal choice when this plandemic started.

Got the garden started, seeds started indoors and are expanding the garden substantially this year. Already have the topsoil and compost delivered. We have some aged compost, but nowhere near enough for the planned expansion.

We have good neighbors and we all have acreage so most have gardens and critters. Also haven’t had real in depth talks with them yet however we are planning to now. That being said, in their feel out the newbies convos, we have picked up good info and so far several seem to be on the same page we are.

All in all, we feel we are in a good place what with all the crap going on in the world and here. As I write this I am sitting on the deck with my dog and listening to the few cars that pass on our small road (can’t see ’em through the woods we live in) in some gorgeous weather. Blessed weekend all.

  20. South Florida here, Atlantic side not too far from Mar-A-Lago. Gas around $/gallon, but I buy the non-ethanol which costs a little more (but I get about 10% better gas mileage with it).

Shelves stocked, traffic normal. But people are on edge, lots of horns beeping in parking lots over the slightest hint of infraction. Some guy in a pickup was trying to backup in the Costco parking lot with some nitwit behind him (I was behind the nitwit and backed up as soon as I say the pickup backing up, to give the nitwit room) and the nitwit didn’t move and blew the horn when the pickup got a tad too close for the old lady’s liking. So short, barrel chested bald guy gets out of the pickup and starts ranting at the old lady in the Volvo. Really pissed off that she dared to blow the horn (and didn’t have the presence of mind to back up and give him a little more room so he could turn into the open parking space he was aiming at). Shopping cart coral jockey intervened and made sure no guns were drawn.

It’s stuff like that I see happening a lot more than it used to. There is definitely
an undercurrent of something – apprehension is probably the best word.

  21. Lurker here. First thoughts are the skinny guy with all the containers…he aint gettin enough to eat so I can’t help but wonder about his system. Needs a sammich.

Here in the SE (GA/Carolina area) it is hard to put a finger on some things. Sometimes grocery stores clearly limited, sometimes prices damn crazy, sometimes just regular crazy. Fertilizer sky high, feed going up rapidly. Fuel…well you know.

Trying to figure out the mood of things. I talk (not much to be honest) to some folks that seem awake but really don’t seem to be preparing for what appears to be coming (already here?). People complaining about price and supply issues but just wanna blame the installed cognitively impaired one. Same with bemoaning the state of our social fabric. Seem to think the next election will make it some better. See more of the demands of diversity, free stuff etc, than I have expected here. Mostly (but not exclusively) younger population.

That being said rural folks here don’t spread their business around a lot. Probably more are prepared and awake than I know. Finally got the gardens in here. Last breeding of rabbits before the heat cranks up, added to the chicken flock. Making arrangements to put cows on neighbors pasture. Equipment is serviced, still need one set of tires. We have spent more than a few years trying to get ready and stay ready. Reckon the test is coming.

  22. In the DC area, gas is anywhere from 3.89 in some places to 4.30 for regular, Not seeing any shortages in food but the prices are getting rough ground beef was listed for 5.99 on sale. Have been getting some things when they are 2 fer but those are on things that I don’t normally get or just to stock up. Wish I knew how to do a garden but the veggies I eat I know don’t do well here and need to look into maybe doing the food saver ideas that way I can start making some more food when it is cheaper and then seal it and freeze it.
Finally getting the yard in shape (90 foot tree hit the house last August, still trying to get the materials to get it fixed) Anyone have any suggestions on why a Toro would run rough when I engage the mower deck? And how to adjust the choke as my cousin fiddled with it and now it only stays running with the choke all the way out.
As for the people it has been fun around here seeing them go boom over Elon buying Twitter, and many are rising up against the over-controlling lib heavy school boards and county councils. November 2022 should be fun. Would you advise on regular buttered popcorn for that or maybe find a way to do white cheddar cheese?

  23. Suburb of twin cities MN here,
Crime in Mpls and St. Paul is beyond anything previous. Have not spent a dime in either city for two years. Fuck em. Not gonna comment further but check out Aplhanews.org and Bringmethenews.com They are doing the heavy lifting in lieu of the bought and paid for mass media hereabouts.

We’re a solid month behind weather wise. Been a brutal spring. Very cold. Windiest in 6 decades, 2nd coldest in last 20…but that was last week. Still just cloudy n cold…

Saw pallets of vinegar spread throughout three separate aisles at Costco last week. Didn’t investigate as just seeing this made me realize they are hiding stock shortages and cucumbers do not go to pickling in April in Minnie. Covid yeast/vag issues?

Wrenched w my neighbor today and replaced the front drive shaft on the 2008 Grand Cherokee I sold to him for his daughter to drive two yrs ago. Its got 214k plus on it. I rebuilt that shaft twice over the years and rebuilt the entire front end suspension. I told him i will buy it back and then replace the motor. Great rig to wrench. Easy to access for repairs. Tons of parts available. I miss the 246 watt stereo and 4.7 motor.

Now to turn to my 20 year old Craftsman lawn tractor. Gonna replace the tranny drive belt for the first time. Mower’s been a beast all these years. Lotta oak twigs on property so I upgraded to the heavy duty blades years back…solid investment!

Gonna have to tear apart the horiz v twin and replace gaskets soon. Nothing like your labor of love with the donated basket case (well done!!).

Taking a shot a lapping the valves on Tecumseh 5 hp Snow King motor. Its a solid machine, but after discussing power issue under load w local small engine dude it makes sense.

Now to take care of my most cherished. Setting up a plan for Mother’s Day.

I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into your blog. You and Wire Cutter are my daily go to’s. Good shit’s as we say in the northland.

    Go Wild!

    Bic

  24. Follow up:
Gas in Mpls and St Paul 3.99 on interstate, 3.89 in burbs, cheaper at Costco. Eggs typically run 99 cents…2.49 today, 2.99 last week. Glen Taylor (owner of Mn Timberwolves, etc.) owner of a 5 MILLION bird poultry operation in Storm Lake, Iowa had to cull entire population due to avian flu. Do the math…it’s all around.

Petsmart had a few empty slots in the dog health aisle today. Ammo selection improving, if you want to pay. Gov Walz setting up to take 9 billion surplus from the overtaxed and send “Walz checks” (remember this in Nov!) to all Minnesotans…deadbeats, unemployed, tax dodgers..illegals. Flat out theft and redistribution. This should motivate earners to wake up.

    Gnight

  26. I think the best tip for a better future is to bring back tarring and feathering politicians. We seriously have not run a criminal politician out of office properly in a very long time.
