could have been a favorite horse or dog most likely.
THAT’S RAYCISS !!
It wasn’t Guy Gibson’s dog–the date is too early.
For some reason makes me think of a bit of local controversy a while back. One of the distant (and heretofore largely undeveloped) suburbs had a road that had been extent for over 100 years, named “Old Slave Road”. It was in an area of mostly disused farmland that was rapidly being built out with multi-million dollar homes, and the street name was thus considered unbecoming of such a newly fancy neighborhood.
It was thereby gentrified right out of existence, to assuage the stupidly misplaced white guilt/discomfort of those buying homes in the area. I believe there was an old slave cemetery in that general vicinity as well. I assume it was left as is, but would need to do some digging to find out the disposition. It would be unsurprising if it were relocated to permit construction or another home or two..
While I’m not one to celebrate slavery (it should never have been instituted to begin with because it was stupid to import people who didn’t belong here, and we could’ve avoided much aggravation and expense that resulted from the practice if it hadn’t been) it also pisses me off that history is erased again and again just because some pussy has their feelings hurt. There was no legitimate reason to change that street name. Meanwhile, Robert E. Lee would like a word with all these damnable revisionists.
Robert E Lee, one of America’s greatest Generals. Pity he was on the losing side, he was greatness personified (for a mere Mortal)!
(And I might point out that I’m a Northerner. Well. Pacific Northwesterner, anyway.)
My neighbor had a dog they called nigger. They really did not connect it to race.
Tell me it wasn’t a Black Lab…
It was an ethnic lab.
…as long as it wasn’t a meth lab.
Always wanted to name one of mine Dammit….Come here Dammit…Sit Dammit.
Wifely unit doesn’t appreciate the humor though.
Had a black lab mix many years ago, called him “Spooky”. Naturally, “Spooky” eventually became “Spook”.
Neighbor down the street had moved, and sold to an African American family. Seemed nice enough, and didn’t have any issues.
One night, let the dog out, and he ran off. Went looking and calling for him. Here Spook. Passed the neighbors house, he had a group of friends over for a party in the back yard. You guessed it, after calling for the dog, I heard in a deep voice, “Who you calling Spook?” Neighbor understood, and explained to the guests that it was the dog I was calling. He was cool, and everybody had a good laugh but I made sure not to call the dog in the future when he had guests
My mum had a Heinz 54 bitch that we called ‘Blackie’, on account of her coat colour. Traditional pet names like ‘Sootie’ or the aforementioned ‘Nigger’ are now less common in Australia, but certainly haven’t been abandoned at all.
I wonder if Cederq called his Chihuahua bitch ‘Guido’ because he didn’t want to offend any Messicans? No, probably not.
Heinz 57 Johno, get it right!
“ I once had a dog I named ‘Stay’. I’d open the door and yell Come here, Stay…Come here, Stay….now he just ignores me and keeps on typing”
With a tip o the hat to Stepehn Wright.
How do the Africans deal with the dead. Leave them for the creatures to eat, burn them in wood piles or bury them?
I believe that Worcestershire sauce deals with any gamey taste from the choicest cuts. The remainder being used as bait for the crab pots.
That’s no racist joke, friends, simply a reflection of the practicalities involved.
You do recall the reports of waterways choked with the bodies of the dead during the kerfuffle in Rwanda? The crocs, bull and tiger sharks, flesh-eating fish of any size, all crustaceans and various worms would have feasted well for quite a while. That attempt at genocide being not so unusual in the Dark Continent, just better recorded and reported than most others were.
There’s a bloody good reason that every race, religion or creed which attempted exploration, civilisation of the blacks, or mere empirialist expansionism, kept guns at the ready (not just within reach) and it .wasn’t just respect for the predatory capabilities of the wildlife.
